Muharram 2024: Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and one of the four holy months during which combat is prohibited. Muharram is the holiest month after Ramadan.

Different Muslim communities mark this anniversary in different ways. Muharram is regarded by some Muslims as a month of mourning that honors the Battle of Karbala. Although Muharram is predominantly an Islamic holiday, those of other faiths are welcome to participate in or observe Muharram celebrations in India.

History of Muharram

The tenth day of Muharram is observed by Muslims both Sunni and Shia in India and around the world. Muharram is often regarded as a month of sorrow among Shia Muslims. On this day in Muharram, 680 CE, Imam Hussain passed away and bloodshed erupted at Kerbala. The Prophet Muhammad’s grandson is Imam Hussain. On the 10th of Muharram, which also happened to be the day an Egyptian pharaoh and his warriors perished in the Red Sea later in time, Muslims believe that God created Adam and Eve.

How Do People Celebrate Muharram?

The Shia Muslim community observes Muharram as the time when they remember and grieve the death of Hazrat Imam Hussain. Mourning begins on the first night of Muharram and lasts for the following two months and eight days. The first ten days of the festival are given more weight than the rest. On the first day of Muharram, the community dresses in black and offers prayers. Black is regarded as the hue of mourning. Shia Muslims conduct street processions on the tenth day. On the roadways, they stroll barefoot. They loudly sing and suppurate in remembrance of Hussain. A similar event is held in 2023 during the Muharram holiday.

2023’s Public Life of Muharram Holiday

The final day of Muharram, the tenth day is a nationally recognized holiday. Post offices, banks, and government agencies must therefore be closed on that particular day. Islamic shops and enterprises may be closed or operate with shortened hours. Large parades, marches, and prayer gatherings may interrupt local traffic. During the festival, traffic may be a concern in areas where Muslims are the majority.
