The Dearness Allowance (DA) is an increment given by the central government twice a year. It was a vital segment of every Central Government employee. The Dearness Allowance is calculated from basic pay and allotted as a percentage.
Recently, the Government of India has hiked the DA percentage up to 4% from July 2024. The central government employee’s and pensioners’ DA percentage will change from 34% to 38% approved by the cabinet committee.
7th CPC Dearness Allowance (DA) calculation
The rate of DA for this July 2024 DA installment is 38 %. DA percentage is required to calculate the exact Dearness Allowance from July 2024
- The formula to calculate DA rate allowances is, DA rate= basic salary * DA percentage/ 100
By applying formula : Dearness Allowance: (49,000 x 17) / 100 = 8330
2. For calculating the DA percentage in the 7th Pay Commission,
6th CPC DA Percentage = (12 Monthly Average – 115.76) / 115.76 x 100 (ignore decimals)
7th CPC DA Percentage = (12 Monthly Average) – 261.42) / 261.42 x 100(ignore decimals)

Central Government Pensioners DA calculation
Dearness Relief (DR) is applicable to retired government employees. It was the same as Dearness Allowance (DA). DR is calculated by the basic pension. It was also declared twice a year in the months of March and September.
The formula for DR is, Member’s Monthly Salary = Pensionable salary X Pensionable service / 70
Applying the formula, (15000 * 35 / 70) = Rs. 7,500 per month.
Defense Personnel DA Calculation
7th CPC continues paying MSP (Military Service Pay) for Defense personnel. It was counted as a DA. Military service pay was started in the 6th CPC commission.
The formula for DA Allowances =( basic pay + MSP + Group ‘X’) * percentage / 100.
By applying formula , Dearness Allowance= [(37,000 + 5200 + 3600) x 17) / 100] = 7786

Freezing of Dearness Allowance
The central government employees will get an additional percentage of DA once in six months. This DA percentage is stopped for a certain period is known as the freezing of Dearness Allowance.
